“I thought Repealing infinitely more eligible than Enforcing”

Faced with opposition from American colonists and British merchants, Parliament repealed the Stamp Act in 1766. In this memorandum, George III records the evolution of his views on the act. He writes, “I thought Repealing infinitely more eligible than Enforcing, which could only tend to widen the breach between this Country & America.”
