Notes
- - Caption label from display (2024): Lady Liberty. Made at the time of the U.S. Bicentennial, this image shows an artist laying claim to the Statue of Liberty an emblem of immigration, citizenship, plurality, freedom, and American identity. Carved near the base is the word "Aztlán" ("White Land"), the name for the Aztec land of origin. Legend locates Aztlán in the areas of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and California, making the point that Chicanos have claim to the land that is now the United States. Of Yaqui and Mexican descent, California artist Ester Hernández is one of the defining figures of the Chicano art movement.
