Notes
- - Exhibit caption (2014): Giving a modern treatment to the Library's 1897 original building, Japanese artist Hiratsuka Un'ichi framed its dome with a latticework of leafy tree branches, trees, and shrubs. He was a leading figure in the sosaku hanga (creative prints) movement, which departed from earlier Japanese collaborative printmaking traditions. Instead, its artists were interested in controlling the artistic process from start to finish in creating "self-drawn, self-carved, self-printed" works. Hiratsuka moved to the United States in 1962 and spent the second half of his life as an artist in the Washington area. The artist's daughter, Keiko Hiratsuka Moore, recalled, "This print of the Library's Jefferson Building was one of his favorite creations."
- - Caption label from exhibit "Floating World," Modern & Contemporary section: The Library of Congress. This print of the Library of Congress was created by Hiratsuka Un'ichi (1895-1997), one of the leaders of the Creative Print Movement in the 1920s and 1930s in Japan. He moved to the United States in 1962 and spent the second half of his life as an artist in the Washington, D.C., area. This print shows the "tsukubori" woodcarving technique created by Hiratsuka, which produces jagged edges instead of smooth lines. The artist's daughter, Keiko Hiratsuka Moore, reports, "This print of the Library's Jefferson Building was one of his favorite creations."
