  • Editorial cartoon is a head and shoulders caricature of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi wearing a military hat. His shoulder boards are drawn as slender books labeled "Green Book." Happy people stand and wave on one book, while two prisoners hang in chains from the other. Qaddafi took control of the government of Libya in a coup in 1969 and has since ruled as dictator. His social, economic, and religious philosophies are contained in his three-volume "Green Book," modeled after the Red Book of Mao Tse-Tung. Qaddafi is an ardent Arab nationalist and social revolutionary, whose ideas contain elements of capitalism, Marxism, and Islamic ideology. The cartoonist contrasts Qadaffi's claims for social progress with his reputation as a brutal dictator.
