About this Item
Title
- Alice remains in Wonderland / L.D. Warren.
Summary
- Cold War cartoon shows Alice in Wonderland (labeled "Peace") walking away in bewilderment from a large caterpillar (bearing Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev's face), seated on a large mushroom (labeled "Summit") smoking a hookah. The smoke from the hookah is labeled "Attacks, Charges, Insults, Repetition, Misrepresentation, Slurs, Promises, Slander [and] Propaganda." A label reads: "'Come back!' the caterpillar called after her. 'I've something important to say ---!'" In the book, Alice's encounter with the caterpillar is characterized by insults, challenges, and misunderstandings. During the latter years of the Eisenhower Administration, Khrushchev continually called for a summit meeting of the heads of state, but the Americans generally dismissed the idea as a propaganda ploy. Warren was editorial cartoonist for the Cincinnati Enquirer for more than 25 years.
