- Photographs taken during a trip by John D. Whiting and G. Eric Matson to the Cappadocia region of Turkey in October and November of 1935, on the request of the National Geographic Society. Whiting, a member of the American Colony in Jerusalem, worked as a tour guide, businessman, writer, and photographer. Photographs show the locations of Gueureme (Göreme), Metchan (Maçan/Avcılar), Tchaouch In (Çavuşin), Gula Deri (Güllü Dere), Pasha Baja (Paşabağ) Valley, Zilve (Zelve), Soghanli Deri (Soğanlı Dere), and Dalarat. Depicted are the volcanic rock landscape, cave churches, homes, and other facilities; frescoes, local people, and towns. Also shown are Kayseri, Ankara, the Taurus Mountains and Beilan (Belen) in Turkey, and Byzantine ruins in Syria. Album page image number 1-16 (p. 1-23): Photographs including: A fresco of King Solomon in Elmalı church, Guereme (Göreme); volcanic cones in Metchan (Maçan/Avcılar), dovecotes and road in Gula Deri (Güllü Dere); street, "burghul" mill, rock rooms, and Matson photographing in Tchaouch In (Çavuşin); volcanic cone homes, triple top volcanic cone, chapel and tomb of St. Simon, church and Mrs Smith coming down a shaft in Pasha Baja (Pasabağ) valley. Album page image number 17-44 (p. 24-45): Photographs including: Cliffs, interior of volcanic cone home, stairway to home, mosque, and stable at Zilve (Zelve); lava spikes at Dalarat; cliffs, ox carts, pigeon houses, monasteries, frescoes, Church of St. Barabara, and mayor and son at home in Soghanli Deri (Soğanlı Dere). Album page image number 45-58 (p. 46-59): Photographs taken from Nov. 20-24 during the trip back to Jerusalem including: Bulgar Dağ, the Taurus Mountains, the Cilician Gates pass, photographers' car stuck in mud and being freed by water buffalo, "Snake Castle" (Yilan Kale) and a well near Adana (Turkey), village of Beilan (Turkey), a Bedouin camp in the Byzantine ruins of Deir el Banat, Byzantine monastery ruins near the Turkish border, Greek and Latin inscriptions, Byzantine road and ruins near Bab el Hawa (Syria). Album page image number 59-67 (p. 60-68): Photographs including: Atatürk statue near Kayseri, government buildings, Atatürk statue, railroad station, and the Roman Temple of Augustus in Ankara (Nov. 4-5, 1935); Dr. and Mrs. Nute and Maryle at the Talas Mission, Mrs. Smith in a wine cellar at Pasha Baja (Pasabağ) and Mrs. Smith wearing "Turkish national costume."
