  • World War II cartoon shows British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in a frock coat and high silk hat, holding an umbrella labeled "British Diplomacy" and pulling an unwilling British lion on a leash. Chamberlain's face is missing. Hitler laughs with a Japanese soldier, pointing to the missing face. Chamberlain was frequently photographed with an umbrella which came to be used as his symbol in cartoons. In September 1938, he signed an historic agreement with Hitler at Munich which he believed preserved much of Czechoslovakia as an independent nation. When Hitler broke the agreement in March 1939, Chamberlain's reputation as a peacemaker was shattered. The caption suggests that British diplomacy has lost credibility not only with Germany, but also with Japan.

All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress.
