  • Cartoon shows former Secretary of Commerce Henry Wallace defending a crouching frightened bear labeled "Poor Li'l Russia" from a furious man -- labeled "U.S. Bipartisan Foreign Policy (According to Mr. Wallace)" -- who is attacking the bear with bricks labeled "Crisis." After World War II, American relations with Russia deteriorated sharply as the government officials (both Democratic and Republican) came to see the former ally as bent on world domination. Wallace was one of the few prominent politicians who believed it was American foreign policy that was at fault.

All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress.
