About this Item
Title
- "Maybe if we offered bingo...." / Marlette.
Summary
- Editorial cartoon shows Democratic Presidential nominee George McGovern as a minister and Vice Presidential nominee Sargent Shriver as his accolyte, on the lookout for members. They stand in front of the "Church of St. Adlai," next to a sign reading, "Today's Sermon: 'Come Home America!' George S. McGovern, Pastor." Shriver suggests (true to his Catholic upbringing), "Maybe if we offered bingo . . ." In 1974, the Democratic Party picked Senator McGovern, a member of its liberal wing, in the tradition of Adlai Stevenson who had run as a staunch liberal in the 1950s. McGovern's campaign suffered a number of disasters including the broadcast of his "Come Home, America" acceptance speech at 3:00 in the morning when almost no one was watching. His first choice for Vice President, Thomas Eagleton, was forced to drop out of the race when the fact that he had had shock treatment for mental problems was revealed. In November, the Democrats were defeated 520-17, in one of the largest electoral vote margins in history. Marlette drew cartoons for the Charlotte Observer and other southern newspapers from 1972 until his death in 2007 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. He also drew the popular comic strip Kudzu.
