Summary

  • Four panel comic strip shows Kudzu sitting on the porch with his Uncle Dub looking at the stars. Kudzu, inspired, recites the "Star light, star bright" rhyme and asks his uncle to make a wish. Dub responds sourly, "I wish you'd shut the heck up!" Crestfallen, Kudzu responds, "Granted." Editorial cartoonist Doug Marlette drew the comic strip Kudzu from 1981 until his death in 2007. Kudzu Dubose is an idealistic and impressionable North Carolina boy, frequently squelched by his friends and relatives. He was named after the Japanese vine imported to provide crop forage and stop erosion that subsequently grew out of control in the warm humid Southeastern states, taking over millions of acres.

All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress.
