Summary

  • Ten panel comic strip shows Uncle Dub, a good old boy, and a friend teasing Kudzu about keeping a "diary," although Kudzu insists it is a journal. Dub says, "First it was the bebop music, then the long hair ... now my very own nephew is writin' in some sissy diary!" The friend responds, "I bet he's got real purty handwritin' ... Haw! Haw!" Kudzu thinks sadly, "I wonder if Hemingway started out this way ..." Editorial cartoonist Doug Marlette drew the comic strip Kudzu from 1981 until his death in 2007. Kudzu Dubose, an idealistic and impressionable North Carolina boy, is frequently squelched by his friends and relatives. He was named after the Japanese vine imported to provide crop forage and stop erosion that subsequently grew out of control in the warm humid Southeastern states, taking over millions of acres.

If an image is displaying, you can download it yourself. (Some images display only as thumbnails outside the Library of Congress because of rights considerations, but you have access to larger size images on site.)
