- - Adolf Hitler was convinced that his ambitions to expand the German empire over Europe could only be realized after asserting dominance over the Soviet Union. In the meantime, in order to secure his position in the southern part of the continent, Hitler came to the aid of Mussolini whose invasion of Greece proved disastrous. At the time Darling's cartoon was published, Greek forces had moved the Italian armies back, and the Turkish government, responding to a special message from Hitler, announced that it had no interest in expanding its dominion over other nations and would take whatever defensive measures were necessary to protect Turkish territory and assure her own independence.
