(2009) "White is Black, Black is White, Night is Day ": The Berlin Airlift proved that Americans and Britons could overcome the Cold War and reach out to those who recently had been enemies. The World War II Allies Great Britain, France, the United States, and the Soviet Union had divided Germany and Berlin. East and West Berlin were located entirely within the Soviet sector. On June 24, 1948, the Soviets blocked land access to the city. In response, pilots flew more than 270,000 flights bringing humanitarian aid to the city. In the face of Western resistance, the Soviets withdrew the blockade on May 12, 1949.

    • Yes, the item is digitized. Please use the digital image in preference to requesting the original. All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress. In some cases, only thumbnail (small) images are available when you are outside the Library of Congress because the item is rights restricted or has not been evaluated for rights restrictions.
      As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference librarian.
