About this Item
Title
- Workers, arise / Herblock.
Summary
- Editorial cartoon shows a communist agitator holding a sign "Workers, Arise" beneath the hammer & sickle symbol, standing on a box on West German soil, ranting before two citizens, while just across the border, in East Germany, the bodies of dead workers cover the ground in front of a Soviet tank. "In mid June of 1953, shortly after Joseph Stalin's death, some 50,000 workers in East Berlin rebelled against potential pay cuts tied to increased production quotas. East German police and Soviet army troops mobilized to quell the uprising, which spread quickly throughout East Germany. Combined forces killed an undetermined number of workers and injured many more in a brutal clampdown strongly condemned by non-Soviet nations. Herblock depicts the shocking sight of workers slain during the events." [Source: exhibit caption]
