  • Cartoon shows Democratic National Committee Chairman Ed Flynn admonishing New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, who is about to make a radio speech. His script reads, "Think of it, folks. Willkie even joined Tammany Hall when lots of good Democrats refused to go into such an organization." A portrait of President Roosevelt, labeled "Our Candidate," looks down from the wall, while the Tammany Tiger cowers behind Flynn. The 1940 presidential campaign produced some unusual political alliances. The Republican candidate, Wendell Willkie, had been a registered Democrat until shortly before the nomination and had briefly been a member of the notoriously corrupt New York County Democratic Committee, otherwise known as Tammany Hall. La Guardia, known as the "Little Flower," was a feisty reformist Republican with a long history of fighting Tammany Hall. La Guardia supported Roosevelt, who was running for an unprecedented third term."
