About this Item
Title
- You haven't put down my greatest gain, our realization that we've just begun to fight
Summary
- World War II cartoon shows Mars, the God of War, as a clerk adding up America's "Gains" and "Losses" in a ledger labeled "First Year of War." Losses include Pearl Harbor, Wake Island, Bataan, and the Java Sea. Gains are the Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal, and North Africa. Uncle Sam, rolling up his sleeves, declares, "You haven't put down my greatest gain: our realization that we've just begun to fight." "I have not yet begun to fight" are the words attributed to American Revolutionary War captain John Paul Jones after a British commander inquired if he were ready to surrender. Despite the fact that his own ship was badly damaged, Jones and his crew captured the British ship. One year after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States had stopped the Japanese advance and had begun to take the offensive in Europe. Berryman argues that the American people understand that although they have taken heavy losses, they will win the war in the long run.
