Title
- The United Mine Workers, wedded to A.F.L., ...
Summary
- World War II cartoon shows United Mine Workers President John L. Lewis (shown as the young Pilgrim John Alden) addressing American Federation of Labor President William Green who is shown as Pilgrim maiden Priscilla Mullins. Lewis says "The United Mine Workers, wedded to A.F.L., would bring 600,000 new members into the family!" Green responds, "And why don't you speak for yourself, John?" Lewis had taken the UMW out of the A.F. of L. in the 1930s, but in May 1943, he sent Green a letter proposing reaffiliation and enclosing a check for $60,000 as the first year's dues. This was part of an ongoing labor struggle between the feisty Lewis and the two dominant labor organizations, the A.F. of L. and the C.I.O. Berryman viewed the entire labor struggle as unpatriotic in time of war. In this cartoon he used the motif of the poem, "The Courtship of Miles Standish" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. In the poem, the bluff Standish sends John Alden as his emissary to ask the lovely Priscilla to marry him. Priscilla instead asks John why he doesn't speak for himself.
