About this Item
Title
- Oh, the old gray mare, she ain't what she used to be
Summary
- World War II cartoon shows presidential adviser Harry Hopkins, Vice President Henry Wallace, and Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes, all riding a decrepit horse (labeled "New Deal") and singing the old popular song, "Oh, the old gray mare, she ain't what she used to be." President Roosevelt, watching from an automobile labeled "Win the War," calls out, "Turn her out to pasture, boys. We've got to get going." As the war progressed, the Republicans used the situation to abolish or reduce many of the New Deal social programs, much to the dismay of some Democrats such as Hopkins, Wallace, and Ickes. In December 1943, Roosevelt dismayed them still further when he told reporters that "Dr. New Deal" was no longer necessary and had been supplanted by "Dr. Win-the-War."
