About this Item
Title
- Shoe rationing has hit us, gentlemen ...
Summary
- World War II cartoon shows Office of Price Administration head Prentiss Brown as a shoe salesman, showing shoes to War Production Board head Donald M. Nelson, Secretary of Agriculture Claude Wickard, Rubber Director William M. Jeffers, and Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes. Brown shows them a shoe with small wings, labeled "Mercury Brand" and tells them, "Shoe rationing has hit us, Gentlemen, but you can have all of this model you want, and the faster you wear them out, the better." The OPA announced on February 7 that a shortage of heavy leather needed for soles necessitated the imposition of shoe rationing. Each person was limited to three new pair a year. Since the new order included almost all types of shoes including sports shoes and banned non-functional trimmings, the significance of the Mercury Brand shoe is not clear.
