  • World War II cartoon shows Office of Price Administration head Prentiss Brown as a shoe salesman, showing shoes to War Production Board head Donald M. Nelson, Secretary of Agriculture Claude Wickard, Rubber Director William M. Jeffers, and Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes. Brown shows them a shoe with small wings, labeled "Mercury Brand" and tells them, "Shoe rationing has hit us, Gentlemen, but you can have all of this model you want, and the faster you wear them out, the better." The OPA announced on February 7 that a shortage of heavy leather needed for soles necessitated the imposition of shoe rationing. Each person was limited to three new pair a year. Since the new order included almost all types of shoes including sports shoes and banned non-functional trimmings, the significance of the Mercury Brand shoe is not clear.

All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress. In some cases, only thumbnail (small) images are available when you are outside the Library of Congress because the item is rights restricted or has not been evaluated for rights restrictions.
      As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage.
