About this Item
Title
- Well, you asked for it by running in the usual partisan political sense
Summary
- World War II cartoon shows two President Roosevelts listening to a radio speech, full of invective, by Republican presidential candidate Thomas E. Dewey. An imperious Roosevelt, labeled "Commander in Chief," tells a disgruntled Roosevelt, labeled "Political Candidate," "Well, you asked for it by running in the usual partisan political sense." On September 23, 1944, Roosevelt gave the first speech of his campaign for a fourth term as president. In this speech, he attacked Dewey and the Republican Party, abandoning his stance as aloof chief executive. Dewey struck back a few days later accusing Roosevelt of "frivolous, mudslinging tactics ... demogogy and wisecracks," hiding "a desperately bad record." Roosevelt quickly resumed his stance as preoccupied war leader.
