About this Item
Title
- [Stork delivering Ball to F.D.R. and Miss Democracy with Hillman and Hannegan as children]
Summary
- World War II cartoon shows a happy family made up of President Roosevelt, Miss Democracy (a fussy old lady in corkscrew curls that Berryman frequently used to represent the Democratic Party), and two little boys, Sidney Hillman and Robert Hannegan, dancing around a stork that has just delivered a baby, Senator Joseph H. Ball. Hillman was head of the CIO Political Action Committee, the strongest national political agency supporting the President in his 1944 campaign for the presidency, and Hannegan was Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. The Democrats were elated in October when Republican Senator Ball endorsed Roosevelt over his Republican opponent Thomas E. Dewey, citing the President's strong stand regarding American postwar participation in the United Nations.
