About this Item
Title
- I know what your trouble is, Governor. This country's getting so draft-minded ...
Summary
- World War II cartoon shows House Minority Leader Joe Martin at the Republican National Convention talking to Governor John Bricker of Ohio who hoped to win the Republican nomination for president. In the background can be seen Dewey posters and state signs for "Ill., D.C., Ky., N.Y., Mo. Cal. N.J., Md., [and] Va." Martin says, "I know what your trouble is, Governor. This country's getting so draft-minded that a volunteer hasn't got a chance." In 1944, the popular Thomas E. Dewey, Governor of New York, refused to announce whether he would run for president, but numerous "Draft Dewey" organizations were organized in many states. By the time the Republican convention was held in June 1944, Dewey had more than enough votes to defeat active candidates such as Bricker. Berryman plays on the fact that by 1944, the draft had become an integral feature of American life, and more that ten million men had been drafted.
