  • World War II cartoon shows Uncle Sam striding along confidently, unaware that he is about to step on banana peels labeled "Another Mr. Stalin's Surprise," and "Still Another Mr. Stalin's Surprise." The cartoonist's small signature bear watches in dismay. Behind Uncle Sam stand the Capitol, the Washington Monument, and a sign reading "News Note: President Roosevelt Tells Press Conference That London Conference May 'Talk about Bananas.' (Laughter)." In March 1944, there was speculation that Undersecretary of State Edward Stettinius was being sent to London to talk to British leaders about the Soviet Union's unilateral recognition of Marshal Badoglio as head of the new Italian government. This was only one of a series of actions taken by Stalin without consultation with his allies. When Roosevelt was asked if the inclusion of noted geographer Isaiah Bowman in the delegation meant that territorial matters were to be discussed, he responded facetiously that the discussion might be about bananas and if so Dr. Bowman would know where they were grown. Berryman suggests that the United States needs to be more concerned about the increasingly independent policy being taken by the Soviet Union.
