About this Item
Title
- Don't you boys want to come down and help?
Summary
- Cartoon shows CIO leader Philip Murray and labor leader Sidney Hillman grooming the Democratic donkey while United Mineworkers President John L. Lewis and AF of L President William Green sit on the fence and watch. The donkey asks, "Don't you boys want to come down and help?" Green responds, "Not until we've figured out where we'd be sitting if you win." President Roosevelt's candidacy for a fourth term in 1944 was enthusiastically endorsed by the CIO and by the Political Action Committee set up by Murray and Hillman. Despite general labor support for the Democrats, however, the AF of L adhered to its traditional policy of political neutrality and maverick Lewis continued his feud with Roosevelt, denouncing the president although he did not personally endorse his Republican opponent.
