Summary

  • Cartoon shows Republican presidential candidate Wendell Willkie and the GOP elephant eagerly reaching for a cake on a silver platter offered by a smiling President Roosevelt. The cake is labeled, "Never had, and has not today, any desire or purpose to continue in office, to be a candidate, or to be nominated, BUT-- ." Under his arm, Roosevelt holds a box of candy labeled "Has in no way exerted any influence in the selection of delegates!" The quotations come from a speech made at Roosevelt's instigation by Senator Alben Barkley at the July 1940 Democratic Convention. Roosevelt hoped by this speech to allay suspicions that he was campaigning for an unprecedented third term and to lay the ground for his nomination by acclamation. The cartoonist suggests that the Republicans would be wise to be suspicious of this maneuver.

      As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage.
