About this Item
Title
- Duel in the sun
Summary
- Cartoon shows a duel between two weapons, one a bloody sickle in a hairy hand (labeled "USSR") and the other an umbrella (labeled "Appeasement") in a hand (labeled "British Bloc"). The two weapons are shown against a sun labeled "Korean Truce." The umbrella has been the symbol of appeasement ever since British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, known for carrying an umbrella, agreed to Hitler's demands during the Czech crisis before World War II. The caption refers to the popular novel with the same title by Niven Busch published in the 1940s and the film by the same name. Suggests disapproval of the position taken by the British and other allies in 1952 and 1953, pressuring the United States to take a less rigid position on the matter of the release of Korean prisoners of war who did not wish to be repatriated. This issue was a major stumbling block in reaching agreement with the Communists on an armistice.
