Summary

  • Four-panel comic strip showing the roof of the White House behind a tall wooden fence. In the first panel, a sign on the fence reads "Post No Bills"; on the second, "Post No Bail"; on the third, "Post No Subpoe[nas]"; on the fourth, "Post No Bills of Impea[chment]." In the final panel, a board in the fence has been knocked loose and flowers at its base have wilted. An unseen overheard conversation ensues between President Nixon and an aide in which Nixon refuses to make more evidence (i.e. his tapes) available to those investigating him and makes a feeble joke indicating he will be the judge of what evidence is needed. When his aide responds that some people don't realize that the President has a sense of humor, Nixon immediately demands their names. The cartoon reflects the paranoia of Nixon and his administration during the Watergate Affair as more and more of his aides were indicted and the probability of his impeachment loomed.

All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress. In some cases, only thumbnail (small) images are available when you are outside the Library of Congress because the item is rights restricted or has not been evaluated for rights restrictions.
      As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage.
