Summary
- This work is a brief summary report by a government commission in the Soviet Union tasked with organizing the rescue operations that saved the crew, scientists, and other personnel of the famous ship S.S. Cheliuskin, which sank near the Bering Strait in February 1934 three months after it was trapped in the pack ice of the Chukchi Sea north of Siberia. Valerian Kuiybyshev, a prominent Soviet economic official and member of Stalin's Politburo, was the head of this commission. The appointment of Kuybyshev showed how significant and high-profile the Cheliuskin rescue had become in the Soviet Union. The report highlights key aspects of the rescue, especially the evacuations of the ship's crew by aircraft amidst crippling winter weather. It provides details about the rescue effort, including the mobilization of ships and planes from Vladivostok, Khabarovsk, Petropavlovsk, and Alaska, as well as regional contributions from across Chukotka. The report specifies the number of crew and staff members flown out each day from Camp Shmidt, established by the survivors on the ice near where the Cheliuskin had sunk, among them: five people on April 7; another 22 on April 10; 35 on April 11; and the last six on April 13. This booklet prominently features images of Otto Shmidt, the expedition leader and noted Soviet Arctic expert, as well as of other members of the Cheliuskin personnel and of the heroic pilots who completed the evacuation using an ice-bound landing strip, which the Cheliuskinites had to rebuild repeatedly. The Cheliuskin had left Murmansk for Vladivostok in August 1933 and sailed nearly to the entrance of the Bering Strait before the pack ice immobilized it. It sank near Kolyuchin Island. The women and children were rescued in March; they and the men were flown to Vankarem on the Soviet mainland, except for Shmidt, then seriously ill, who was taken to Alaska. World Digital Library.
