Summary

• The work presented here deals with the schools established by missionaries of the Russian Orthodox Church in the northern part of the Siberian region of Tobolsk. It was published in 1936 during the Soviet era, in Leningrad, by the publishing house of the Institute of the Peoples of the Northern Territory, and it also appeared in English in the newsletter of the Association of the Institute of the Peoples of the Northern Territory (number 7). The author was Alexej Grigor'evič Bazanov (1903-78), about whom little else is known. The work begins with a brief overview of the territory and population of North Tobolsk, followed by a history of missionary and educational activity in the region. It discusses the pedagogy applied in the schools, the teaching of native languages, and the curriculum and textbooks used. The book also has chapters on the changes to the schools after the 1905 Russian Revolution and after the establishment of the Soviet Union following the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. The book is preserved in the collections of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg. It was digitized for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project in the early 2000s.
