Summary

• In the second half of the 19th century, Russian Orthodox missionaries in Siberia focused their efforts on converting groups of Old Believers who had settled in the area around Tomsk. Old Believers are Russian Orthodox Christians who rejected the church reforms carried out by Patriarch Nikon (1605-81) in the mid-17th century. They were severely persecuted, and many of them fled to Siberia. The book presented here describes one year in the official church's efforts directed against the Old Believers, who are referred to as "schismatics." The book includes detailed records about the Old Believer communities. Russian Orthodox Church missionaries ultimately were unsuccessful in converting the Old Believers, due in part to the lack of financial support, the small number of official Russian Orthodox parishes in the territory, and the size of the territory, but also to the deep conviction with which the Old Believers held to their faith. The book was published by the Diocese of Tomsk in 1895. It is preserved in the collections of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg and was digitized for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project in the early 2000s.
