Summary
- Na sluzhenii Altaiu (In the service of Altai) is a long, detailed work that recounts the life of Macarius (born Mikhail Andreevich Nevsky, 1835-1926), one of the most important Russian Orthodox Church missionaries in the Altai (or Altay) Territory of Siberia in the second half of the 19th century. The book includes a number of photographs and poems intended to enhance the reader's understanding of this remote region. At the end is a short list of words spoken by the native peoples of the Altai and their equivalents in Russian. Macarius grew up in a priestly family in the Siberian city of Tobolsk and attended the local seminary. He felt called to missionary work, and joined the Altai Mission, where he served for more than 30 years. He learned the local languages and translated a number of religious works from Russian. He later had his translations of liturgical books published for use by believers in the Altai Territory. Macarius was considered a living saint during his lifetime and was glorified (canonized) by the Russian Orthodox Church in 2000. The author of the book, Aleksandra Makarova-Mirskaya (1872-1936), knew her subject well. She was the daughter of a priest in the Siberian city of Tomsk. The book is preserved in the collections of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg. It was digitized for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project in the early 2000s.
