Translated Title

  • Apostles of the Altai: A Collection of Stories from the Life of the Altai Missionaries, in Honor of the 25 Years of Service of the Most Reverend Makarius, Archbishop of Tomsk and Altai.

Summary

  • Apostoly Altaia (Apostles of the Altai) is an account of Russian Orthodox Church missionary work in the Altai (or Altay) region of Siberia in the late 19th century. The book was written in honor of Macarius (born Mikhail Andreevich Nevsky, 1835-1926), one of the most important missionaries in the Altai Territory during this period, and much of the text is about him and his work. Macarius grew up in a priestly family in the Siberian city of Tobolsk and attended the local seminary. He felt called to missionary work, and joined the Altai Mission, where he served for more than 30 years. Macarius was considered a living saint during his lifetime and was glorified (canonized) by the Russian Orthodox Church in 2000. The author of the book, Aleksandra Makarova-Mirskaya (1872-1936), knew her subject well. She was the daughter of a priest in the Siberian city of Tomsk. The book includes photographs of the missionaries, scenes of the natural beauty of the Altai, and the texts of a number of poems written by and about the missionaries. The book is preserved in the collections of the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg. It was digitized for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project in the early 2000s.
