Summary

  • In the late 1800s and early 1900s, A.A. Kaufman (1864-1919), a Russian specialist in migration and resettlement, traveled through the Russian Far East. This work, which describes in detail the characteristics of three particular regions in this vast area, is the result of those travels. The regions he covers are locations along the Amur River, the Altay territory, and the area around Ussuriysk, all of which he discusses in terms of their characteristics and suitability for settlement. According to Kaufman, Russia at the turn of the 20th century was seized by a "settlement fever," as residents of the more crowded areas of European Russia sought to move east, particularly to the areas beyond Lake Baikal. Published in Saint Petersburg in 1905, the book runs to 353 pages, but it contains no maps, illustrations, or index. A table of contents appears at the end. The book is preserved in the collections of the Russian State Library and was digitized for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project in the early 2000s. World Digital Library.
