- This dataset is an export of transcriptions for 112 images of a petition contained in the Justin S. Morrill Papers in the Manuscript Division. The transcriptions were created by volunteers participating in the Library of Congress crowdsourcing program By the People (https://crowd.loc.gov) campaign We the Undersigned: Black South Carolinians Petition for Equal Rights, 1865. It contains text created by volunteers through a transcription and review process, volunteer-created tags, digital collections metadata, and metadata representing the arrangement of the items in the By the People platform, Concordia.
- The dataset includes transcriptions and data generated from the pages in the By the People campaign We the Undersigned: Black South Carolinians Petition for Equal Rights, 1865 (https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/undersigned/). The campaign consisted of digitized images of all pages of an 1865 petition located in the Justin S. Morrill Papers (https://hdl.loc.gov/loc.mss/collmss.ms000122), which was transcribed in its entirety. The petition extends fifty-four feet in length and contains the names of 3,740 African American residents of South Carolina urging the U.S. Congress to ensure voting rights would be secured to them in a new South Carolina state constitution. - This dataset includes: 2020449287.zip - a zip file containing a CSV file and a README file -- undersigned_2023-09-29.csv - a .CSV containing campaign, project, item, itemID, asset, and asset status metadata, as well as an image URL, the volunteer-created transcriptions, and volunteer-created tags. This .CSV is the direct export of the We the Undersigned: Black South Carolinians Petition for Equal Rights, 1865 campaign.
