- - Caption continues: This child survived only because he was carried in the arms of a monk. In the Diamond Sutra, the Buddha cautions that the world is fleeting, like a candle in the wind, a phantom, a dream, the light of stars fading with the dawn. It is upon this insight that Tibetans measure their past and chart their future. They leave the rest of the world to ask how we possibly could have allowed such a blast of sorrow to sweep through their land and why, to this day, we continue to tolerate the wrath of the Chinese government, even as it pursues the dismantling of Tibetan culture and the violation of a people and a nation that has given so much to humanity.
