  • In this marathon interview (almost 4 hours!), Adele Ardrey discusses her upbringing in Athens County (Ohio), Cleveland, and Columbus; her mother's relationships and her family life; food culture at home; her parents' meeting while working at the Casa Nueva, a worker-owned cooperative Mexican restaurant in Athens; and her early exposure to a local, sustainable version of the food service industry when she began working at Athens' Village Bakery at the age of 13. She then details her journey through Columbus's upstart do-it-yourself scratch food industry, starting with her employment at the former North Market coffeeshop "A Touch of Earth," and including stints as a barista, assembly-line cook, front-of-house worker, baker, greengrocer, and bartender at locations as varied as the Greener Grocer, Till Dynamic Fare, Alana's, Acre Farm-to-Table, Dough Mama, and pizza shop Paulie Gee's. Adele also discusses her role in establishing, running, baking and selling for a scratch seasonal/farm-to-table upstart sourdough bagel business (Companion Bagel/Companion Baking), which she co-founded with her partner, fellow interviewee Jacob Warren Reece Holler, and the culture of bagel baking/slinging at local farmers' markets. She also discusses running an experimental "supper club," Gourmet Picnic, out of their Old North Columbus home. Adele details the creativity and social world she finds in kitchen culture, and voices her disappointment that few Columbus establishments source ingredients or prioritize environmental, labor or social justice missions like the Village Bakery and Casa Nueva did in Athens. She also talks about her hobbies, including her interest in art, sewing/fashion design, interior decorating and event-hosting.
