About this Item

Title

  • Flowers in Ueno, Snowstorm in Iriya.

Summary

  • Presented here is a draft of a kabuki play by Fukuchi Gen'ichiro, commonly seen as Fukuchi Ochi (1841-1906), a journalist, playwright, and novelist. The front cover bears the inscription "Created on March 25, 1900." It is an adaptation by Ochi of the third act of a kabuki play written by Kawatake Mokuami (1816-93) called Kumo ni Magou Ueno no Hatsuhana (The villainous tea priest), which was first performed at the Shintomi-za Theater in Tokyo in March 1881. In March 1900, the Kabuki-za Theater performed The Villainous Tea Priest with Ichikawa Danjuro IX (1838-1903) playing the lead role of Kochiyama Soshun. However, the program was cancelled after the tenth performance as Danjuro had influenza. It is presumed that Ochi modified this script for Onoe Kikugoro V (1844-1903), who took over the role of Kochiyama Soshun from April 1, but it is unclear whether this draft was actually used as the script for the performances. As well as cutting some famous lines from the original The Villainous Tea Priest, Ochi rewrote the act for Kikugoro, for example, by adding lines that evoked Nitto, a Buddhist monk at the Enmei-in Temple, who appeared in Jitsugetsusei Kyōwa Seidan (Disquisition on the political affair of the Kyowa era), first performed at the Shintomi-za Theater in Tokyo in October 1878, a play also by Mokuami that Kikugoro had previously acted in to positive reviews. Although the manuscript is in the handwriting of the adapter Ochi, several modifications were made by additional bits of paper being stuck on and sections being blotted out. The modified sections appear to be in someone else's handwriting, but the details are not clear. In 1874 Ochi became editor in chief at the Tokyo Nichinichi Shimbun (precursor of today's Mainichi Shimbun) and was active in the field of journalism. In 1888 he left the newspaper and established the Kabuki-za Theater the following year. He wrote several Kabuki plays and was elected, late in life, to the House of Representatives.
