- - The Garifuna are an Afro ethnic group that inhabits the coastal area of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In 1635 two slave ships were shipwrecked near San Vicente where they landed and remained free. The English rejected the fact that there were libertarian blacks, so they were sent arriving after vicissitudes to Roatan, in what is now Honduras and Belize. They have kept their language, religion and ways of life and have mixed with indigenous ethnic groups such as the Miskitos. Currently there are communities in New York, Los Angeles and Canada where some 450,000 Garifuna descendants live, most of whom have emigrated to the United States and Canada due to the social and economic problems prevailing in Central America. Where there are around 100,000 Garifuna, 7,000 live in the Pearl Lagoon basin north of Bluefields. The cultural value of Garifuna music has been recognized by UNESCO.
