The Leonard Bernstein: Writings By, From, and To campaign was fully transcribed and reviewed between December 12, 2023 and August 9, 2024.
- The dataset includes transcriptions and data generated from the pages in the By the People campaign Leonard Bernstein: Writings By, From, and To (https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/bernstein/). The campaign consisted of selections of digitized manuscript content from the Leonard Bernstein Collection digital collection (https://hdl.loc.gov/loc.music/collmus.mu000003), of original manuscripts found in the Leonard Bernstein Collection and other related collections.. Composer, conductor, teacher, and social activist, Leonard Bernstein composed the music for symphonies, ballets, chamber works, operas, a film score, a Mass, and several Broadway musicals, notably Candide and West Side Story and conducted dozens of orchestras internationally, including the New York Philharmonic over 40 seasons, with 11 years as its music director. Digitized manuscripts transcribed include a significant selection of correspondence both to and from Bernstein, musical sketches for several of his major works, and writings from his student papers to the scripts for his Young People's Concerts, Thursday Evening Previews, Omnibus, and Ford Presents. See the Leonard Bernstein Collection digital collection (https://hdl.loc.gov/loc.music/collmus.mu000003) for all available online items for this collection, the finding aid for the complete Leaonard Bernstein Collection (https://findingaids.loc.gov/exist_collections/ead3pdf/music/1998/mu998001.pdf), and other contextual information and bibliographic resources.
