Summary

  • The Captain Herbert A. Waterman World War II reconnaissance map collection consists of 4 published topographic maps, 2 manuscript maps, 1 view of the Normandy, France coastline, and 1 photocopy. The maps in this collection are the result of various reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering missions leading up to Operation Overlord. The maps depict different areas of Normandy, and in particular the area of Omaha Beach. 4 of the maps are Geographical Section, General Staff topographic maps showing the areas of Isigny, Ryes, Trevieres, and Saint-Pierre-du-Mont at 1:50,000 (Isigny) and 1:25,000 scale. 1 map depicts the Omaha Beach landing site's coastline as viewed from offshore via a landing craft. The collection also includes 2 manuscript maps showing traffic patterns along the roads in the vicinity of the Omaha Beach landing site. 1 of these maps served as an overlay of the Isigny 1:50,000 topographic map sheet included in this collection. This collection was received as a donation from the family of Capt. Herbert A. Waterman, a World War II veteran who served in the 457th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion and landed at Omaha Beach on June 7, 1944.
