Summary

  • "As lead federal agency, the Central Yukon Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has developed an environmental impact statement to evaluate whether to grant a right-of-way for the Ambler Road across BLM-managed lands in the northen Interior of Alaska (in Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area and in the eastern Northwest Arctic Borough). The Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) proposes to construct a new 211-mile-long gravel access road in the southern Brooks Range foothills to provide industrial access to the Ambler Mining District. The road would originate at mile post 161 of the Dalton Highway near Prospect Creek and end at the Ambler Mining District, and would have no public access. The proposed project crosses state lands (61%) and Native corporation lands (15%), but also crosses federal lands (24%) managed by the BLM and the National Park Service. AIDEA has submitted a permit application to request right-of-way across BLM-managed lands. There are two alternative routes--one includes a short deviation in the middle of the route while the other is a more southerly route starting at mile post 60 of the Dalton Highway just north of the Yukon River. This record of decision of BLM and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers."-- Source other than Library of Congress.
