About this Item

Title

  • Some problems of distribution; the development of chain store merchandising and its economic effects,

Summary

  • This address to industrialists claims that prosperity is unevenly distributed across the country and among industries. For instance, textile and clothing businesses are not as prosperous as those dealing in radios or automobiles. The author attributes this to the shift underway in American industry from an emphasis on production to an emphasis on distribution and points out that America itself has changed from a debtor to a creditor nation in the wake of the First World War. The author argues that the United States should therefore broaden its markets at home and abroad by adjusting tariff policy. The final portion of the publication consists of answers to questions on a range of topics from business consolidations to survival strategies for retailers and from the economic and social consequences of the eradication of small businesses to mass production's effect on distribution costs.
