About this Item

Title

  • What is the chain store's responsibility to its community?

Summary

  • This work maintains that the relationships between chain stores and their communities are shaped by chain stores themselves, independent retailers, the purchasing public, and politics. The author (the head of J.C. Penney) blames independent retailers for their own failures and suggests that chain stores help independents by treating them as associate merchants in the community. On the basis of a survey of one thousand housewives in fifty towns in six Midwestern states, the author concludes that 93.2 percent of the those surveyed had no objections to trading with chains. He also attempts to determine what the chains can do to serve both customers and the community, to be fair competitors to established retailers, and to build public confidence. American Memory.
