Title
- The crowd
Summary
- Mary, a working girl, meets John Sims, a dreamer who believes that luck will eventally bring him success. They marry after their first date--to Coney Island--and honeymoon at Niagara Falls. After 5 years and two children, John, who works as a clerk, has not distinguished himself from the rest of the "crowd." Winning $500 in a slogan contest brightens their lives, but the death of the younger child causes John to become despondent. He and Mary quarrel; he loses his job and becomes a door-to-door salesman; and Mary follows her family's advice to leave him. John is at the point of committing suicide when consideration for his son prevents him. The couple eventually overcome their hardships and finally reunite.
