Summary

  • Crummell, pastor of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C., from 1879 to 1898, spoke out for Black liberation and founded the Negro Academy. He calls for charitable insititutions to be established by African American churches to care for widows, the poor, orphans, etc., at a time when none exist -- a glaring shortcoming, Crummell says, of African American churches. He cites Washington, D.C., as an example of a city full of African American churches without any charitable institutions.
