Summary
- Presentation album to Adolf Hitler, Christmas 1935, from the guards at the prison camps in the Emsland region of Germany--Börgermoor, Aschendorf (i.e. Aschendorfermoor), Brual-Rhede, Walchum, Neu-Sustrum, and Oberlangen. The photographs show guards, prisoners, facilities, and activities at the camps in a positive light. Photos of the guards include group photos of each camp's guards; guards in formation; training with weapons & horses; engaging in sports activities; cleaning weapons after duty; working in the guard house; grooming horses; mounted guards along the German/Dutch border; guard towers along the border. Prisoners are shown in formation; going to work; building streets with stones; building a canal along the border; digging potatoes; constucting a building; hauling manure wagon; working at machines; blacksmithing; leatherwork and sewing; taking a lunch break; returning from work on a special train. Views of the camps include panoramic, bird's-eye views of each camp; watch towers, buildings and machinery in the camps; road signs along the roads connecting the camps; waterworks building; a sod(?) building on the moor to protect against lightning storms; prisoners' barracks; guards' dayroom in barracks; camp laundry; camp kitchen showing equipment. Also views of the moors; canals and canal boats. A sailor, a shepherd, a farmer and a peatcutter from the area are also pictured. Additionally, the album includes a dedication to Hitler, hand-signed by the camps' commander Werner Schäfer, and a page showing the progress in crop production, roads laid, and general development of the camps from their inception in 1934 to Dec. 1935.
