  • -  Colonel Frederick Funston of the 20th Kansas Volunteer Infantry and two comrades, Privates William B. Trembley and Edward White, were all awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for crossing the Rio Grande de la Pampanga, Luzon, Philippine Islands, 27 April 1899. According to sources, White and Trembley actually swam the river, while Funston found and ferried the raft, and was among the first to cross. According to Wikipedia, Funston "took a Filipino position at Calumpit by swimming the Bagbag River, then crossing the Pampanga River under heavy fire". Could not confirm in other secondary sources.
