Young, Miles City MT: discussion of Hollywood misrepresentation of cowboys, compared to Charlie Russell's drawings, which depict cowboy gear correctly; about jobs on the trail: wranglers, nighthawks, etc.; about hiring a new cook, how the men would "job" each other, play jokes, the new cook was told that all the cowboys would eat was Mulligan stew, cornbread, and coffee three times a day, so that's what he cooked, then one cowboy got sick of stew and dumped it into the Powder River, the cook ran away, then the truth came out and the cook came back and cooked fine meals; about horses trained for polo games, Sunday horse rides; story about a greenhorn from the East who had gone to Virginia Riding School and didn't know western horses are accustomed to being mounted from the left side. The fieldworker's notes indicate that for this reel (part 1 of 3), the right-channel microphone did not work properly, and thus the recording is not in stereo. Parts 2 and 3 of the set have stereo recordings made with a "tip-to-tip" configuration of two Sennheiser 402 microphones. Paul E. Young is the author of a manuscript published after the project as Back Trail of an Old Cowboy (University of Nebraska Press, 1983).
