Notes

  • -  Index data: G-Chatsworth; 27GT; 2A-3A, Francis Mick and a young helper corral the last of the cranberries from a harvested bog, drawing them toward the elevator. (The elevator was designed and built by Mr. Dave Thompson of Pemberton; the corral was designed by Mr. Ernest DiStephano, Senior of Chatsworth, and buiIt by the Micks.); 4A, Francis Mick draws a cedar boom, a section of the corral, toward the shore after harvesting the bog; 5A, The corral drawn into a tight circle, holding the last berries close to the elevator so they can be pushed up its conveyor belt into the packing crates set on the truck bed, and taken to the packing house; 6A-7A, Overexposed; 8A-11A, Mr. Dave Kalm, a family friend and harvest employee who works primarily as a real estate and insurance agent and as a clammer, checks and starts the machinery on the elevator; 12A-14A, A young harvest employee moves boom sections removed from the corral as the circle is drawn tighter and smaller; 15A-16A, Closeups of a cranberry scoop, used for harvesting before the Micks adopted the technique off looding the bogs and running "beaters" through to knock the berries from the vines, five or ten years ago. The teeth of the scoop are combed Iightly through the vines, separating the cranberries from their threadthin stems. A good scooper can remove the berries without tearing the vines. Mr. Francis Mick is holding the scoop; 17A, Mr. Francis Mick looks out over the bog just harvested, holding the scoop he brought to show Christine Cartwright an older method of harvesting. (He also brought some color photographs taken the previous year by Dave Kalm.); 18A, Long shot of workers guiding the cranberries toward the elevator; 19A, Long shot of Dave Kalm watching over the progress of the berries up the elevator and into the packing crates; 20A, Long shot of workers guiding the cranberries toward the elevator; 21-23A, DetaiIs of the joints that connect boom section in the corral. Mr, Henry Mick shows how the metal pin slides easily in and out so that the corral can be expanded and contracted by turning a wing nut and removing the pin. This is done many times during the operation, by workers out in the bogs; 25A, Long shot of the truck, elevator, and corral in operation; 26A-36A, Mr. Henry Mick demonstrates the use of the cranberry scoop.
