Notes

  • -  Summary: Ronald Barz was one of the commissioners of the Hyde Park fire department. He was at home when his wife said to turn on the news. While watching, he saw the second plane hit. The City of New York called him to request a heavy rescue crew. He stayed at the firehouse to try to locate firehouse members and patrol officers while a rescue crew went downtown. Word started coming in about firefighters who had been killed. He remembers coming to the site the next day, and it looked like it had snowed on Wall Street. There was a thick brownish ash on the ground. He remembers turning down near Trinity Church and looking at the World Trade Center, and anger set in. He got a pair of goggles and a mask and worked on a pile for eight hours. Seeing the result in person was different than seeing it on the television. He wants generations to remember. He came down with double pneumonia in November, and his doctor thought it was from time spent working at the WTC. Later, he was diagnosed with cancer, but he doesn't know if it was connected with his time spent helping at the site. He and another firefighter started an organization to help others deal with the trauma related to their health issues.
